Lesson Plan One

2R3: In literary texts, describe how characters respond to major events and challenges. (RL)

2R5: Describe the overall structure of a text, including describing how the beginning introduces the text and the ending concludes the text.

(RI&RL)

In my elementary school experience as a student and adult, I have always found books where characters talk to the reader to be incredibly engaging. The comic strip activity in this lesson simultaneously reinforces many different components of the sequence of events. After reading through the story, reflecting on the journey and conversations of the animals will lead students to successfully complete the comic strip. It will also lead them to learn how to review key components of a story. This activity is also great because, visually, the combination of characters builds off of itself, adding one character each time. This will help students who need more support or reinforcement to find the correct order, yet won’t limit more advanced students.

I intend to use these lesson plans over three consecutive days as they build off of each other and apply new strategies and skills to the same read-aloud book. These are intended to be 2nd grade lessons in accordance with the NYS Standards, but could be helpful for neighboring grades as well to either get students ahead or as review as needed. I selected the book “Except Antarctica” after some exploring and hearing recommendations from the local librarian.

This is the rubric used to score students on their overall understanding, effort, and completion of this lesson.

Categories of this rubric include: accuracy of sequence (images), accuracy of order (of words), effort, neatness, and focus.
